Dayton's News Source - TOP STORIES

DAYTON-- It's the hottest day of the year in the Miami Valley.
Taking care of your body is priority one, but if your car suffers from the sweltering temps, you could feel it too.

We stopped at Carl's Body Shop to give you some tips on how your four wheels can beat the heat-- starting with the fluids in your engine.

"The proper levels, the right consistency, because it's got to be mixed properly because it can overheat and blow your engine up. You know, people think about coolant for the winter, but it's very important in the summertime too," says Operations Manager Brad Hamilton.

Much like your body has to work harder to stay cool during extreme heat, so does your AC unit.

You need to make sure your fluid and coolant levels are where they need to be, and even if they are, the output still won't be as cold as it would normally when the temperatures aren't so high.

"The AC systems don't seem to be working for some people," says Hamilton. "Now they might be working properly, but they're not cooling to what people want, and that's the humidity working against you, and it's working about as much as possible."

The staff at Carl's says the temperature outside can also affect some things you might not expect.

"Your power steering needs to be at the appropriate temperatures too. There's actually a cold and a heat-sensitive power steering fluid," says Hamilton.

Even your car's ride can be affected if you don't pay attention to where the rubber meets the road.

"When the temperature increases, the tire pressure increases...when the temperature decreases, so does the tire pressure, so you need to stay on top of that because it's really important for gas mileage."Summer-Izing Your Car
