Dayton's News Source - TOP STORIES

DAYTON -- Talk of people with the staph infection MRSA at Miami Valley Hospital has people concerned throughout the Miami Valley, but the word from hospital and public health officials: don't panic, this is not an outbreak.

Miami Valley Hospital is trying to determine if it's a coincidence or if this same strain spread from person to person.

Three different patients in the same unit at Miami Valley Hospital had MRSA last month. Since then, all the patients have recovered and were sent home. But the hospital took notice, and precaution by sending the bacteria out for testing to see if it was all the same strain.

"This is not something that's continuing and in actuality the incidents of MRSA have decreased over the last two years," said Dr. Gary Collier, Miami Valley Hospital's Chief Medical Officer.

When asked if anyone should be concerned at the hospital, Collier responded, "No, the problem that we identified, we thought was unusual and we wanted to be proactive and look at those three isolates to see if there was a common connection."

If there is a common connection, they would need to identify the source which can prove difficult.

"The hospitals have many policies and procedures in place to prevent transmission and they'll take action based on whatever the findings are," said Dr. Thomas Herchline with Public Health Dayton & Montgomery County.

Herchline says they see hundreds of MRSA cases in a single year at hospitals throughout the region.

"Right now there's no evidence of an outbreak... and right now ODH is not doing any investigation," said Herchline.
