Just before 3:30 Thursday morning in Greenville, a Darke County Sheriff's Deputy spotted a white sedan. The man inside was wanted for robbing a Speedway in Greenville back in June. Despite lights and sirens, the driver did not pull over and so began the chase.
Just a few minutes in, police thought it could be over. The driver slowed down, but instead a woman jumps out of the driver's seat with her hands up.
"Feared for her life I think was one of the statements she made to the deputies, and was very scared... deputies were concerned about a possible hostage situation. Fortunately she was released, but he continued on in the pursuit," said Chief Deputy Mark Whittaker of the Darke County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities say - at times - speeds reached more than 100 miles per hour down State Route 121. After about ten minutes, the driver turned into the windy area of Wayne Lakes.
"I think he was thinking he might be able to lose the Deputies. Fortunately the Deputies are very familiar with the area. We have very experienced Deputies and it doesn't turn out the way he thought it would," said Chief Deputy Whittaker.
The suspect's mad dash ended at a curve in the road at the intersection of North Drive and Ottawa. He slammed into a tree in a front yard. With his hands up, 33 year-old Kalob Gray surrendered.
On the dash camera tape that recorded the entire incident, you cab hear Gray saying, "I stole the car... that's alright, I'm alright.
A deputy asks him, "yeah what the hell you doing Caleb?"
"I don't know man I'm (expletive) drunk, so I apologize man," said Gray.
"We don't want to pursue anyone at anytime, it's too dangerous but this is the best case scenario. The property damage was minor, the injuries to him were minor. There were no injuries to the public and no injuries to law enforcement officers and he was taken into custody," said Chief Deputy Whittaker.
Police say Gray received some minor facial injuries from the crash. He was treated and released from the local hospital. Gray is now being held on a 100-thousand dollar cash bond at the Darke County Jail and faces a slew of charges including the original warrant, for robbery.
